Ladder Plant Holder

On a recent holiday to Lanzarote, I spotted a few handmade creations around the resort.  My favourite was a tree made out of wine bottles and lights.  Its looked amazing but not really something I could realistically recreate (although a smaller scale one using beer bottles is an idea).  But one thing I could do and I knew my mum would love was a ladder plant holder.  Being stuck for a Mothers Day gift this year, I thought this would be a great present for her.  So despite my lack of woodworking skills, and with a bit of help, this is what i made.

I bought two pieces of wood from B&Q.  There was enough to make two of them which is what I decided to do. I cut four longer pieces for the sides and eight for the rungs.  After marking where to drill, out came the power tools and I drilled all the holes for the screws.

Once all the holes were drilled I assembled all the pieces together to make the ladders, using an electric screwdriver to make sure the screws were in tight!  Then came the fun part.  Painting.  Now my mum likes bright colours so using just tester pots of garden wood paint, I set to work.  I wanted these to stand out so I painted them multi-coloured.

Now all I had to was find some planters to hang over the rungs.  I spotted some very colourful balcony planters on Ebay but did have a look around just in case there was anything different out there.  But there wasn’t!  So I bought these 10 balcony planters for £12.99 from Ebay.  Once they arrived all I had to do was drill holes in the bottom of each one to help with the water drainage.  That way all that was needed was to buy small plants that could just be placed in the planters in their pots.  Finally, they were attached to the side of the shed using a small baton of wood.

I am so pleased how these turned out.  I may even make some as Christmas presents!!
